7 Best Tarot decks for Beginners | Um, OMG Tarot

When choosing a new deck, many people are encouraged to pick something that resonates with their consciousness.  Images that stimulate the subconscious mind is the goal however, it’s best to start with the basic cards with the traditional imagery.

The Traditional Rider-Waite Tarot decks are the best decks to start with.  It is recommended to because the numerology, symbolism and tarot card meanings inspire hundreds of other interpretative decks.  Also, don’t mistake the classic 78-card deck with an Oracle card deck.  They’re not the same thing, and in some instances, the numerology is differently associated.

It’s still unclear where the Tarot card “game” original began but throughout hundreds of years, tarot cards have been played all over the world.  The original deck was designed by Pamela Coleman Smith who lived as a struggling artist between New York, London and Kingston, Jamaica.  Her illustrations of the Tarot are reflected in the original Rider-Waite Deck (below).

Below is a list of Tarot Card decks that are best for beginner tarot card readers.

  1. Universal Waite Tarot Deck
  2. Universal Tarot deck by Llewellyn Publications
  3. Radiant Rider-Waite Tarot Deck by U S Games Systems
  4. The Good Tarot: A 78-Card Deck and Guidebook by Lifestyles
  5. The Gilded Tarot by Llewellyn Publications

The Anti-In-a-Funk Gemstone Starter Pack| Um, OMG Tarot

So, you’re having one of those days.

Sometimes a bad day starts with a bad dream.  The uneasy feeling of the unknown is troublesome.  There’s no tangible way to fix this problem and it hard to even explain the unbalance.  There are times, the solutions flood to us, and the know-how is present, but the “feels” are all out of sorts.

Until now…  Well not, now, gemstones have existed longer than humans. Their ancient metaphysical properties possess thousands of years of conscious belief those properties!  Here are the best gemstones (that I’ve personally used) for sadness!

  • Citrine Quartz
    • Yellow, orange, shiny–this stone just LOOKS HAPPY.  Citrine looks like it broke off from the sun! I prefer to wear citrine as a necklace or bracelet on my dominant hand.  Citrine is known to encourage positive thoughts, motivation and abundance.  This is the “cheer-me-up” stone.
  • Calcite
    • Orange, blue green–basically calcite comes in every color! Although I like to wear my calcite, I definitely keep chunks around my bed.  Calcite promotes inspiration and prosperity by removing energy blocks.  If you work with the chakras, you probably know all about calcite.  This stone is used to recharge other stones and realign energy!
  • Black Obsidian
    • Black, dense and shiny.  This is one of my favourite grounding stones.  Black obsidian is used for protection, meditation and blocking out bad energy.  I keep chunks of black obsidian at my front door and at my work station.
  • Rose Quartz
    • Light pink quartz? You’ll find this stone everywhere during Valentine’s day. That’s because it’s been long-believed that rose quartz radiates and attracts loving energy.  Rose quartz provides a dose of positivity which promotes self love.
  • Dragon’s Blood
    • Red and green with a warped looking pattern.  The Dragon’s blood calls upon vitality, enthusiasm and courage.  I carry a tumbled dragon’s blood with me in my pocket on days I need to conquer.  This stone also draws affection from others and overall good vibes.  Dragon’s blood jasper is a good stone for the loner, as it increases self awareness and endurance.

Tarot cards that mean DECEPTION! | Um, OMG Tarot

“Is he lying to me?”

“I don’t know. Let’s ask the cards”

There’s a question tarot readers get ALL of the time.  Although this could call for a simple three-card, “Yes/No” spread, there are several cards that indicate lies!

If you’re familiar with spirituality and new age practices at all, the symbolism behind the traditional Rider-Waite tarot decks will feel kinda obvious. One is the beginning, two is about duality and partnership; three is collaboration; four is structure and stability–you get the point.

Sometimes it’s just the repetition of the cards that reinforce an initial impression. Have you ever pulled daily tarot cards for weeks only to notice you got the seven of swords every few days? One time, I KEPT pulling the knight of swords card and before I knew it, I was being yelled at by some hot-head over an inaccurate assumption.

There’s that tarot magic!

All too often, do I sense that “fuccboi” energy in tarot card readings. This is represented by unevolved, misguided versions of the zodiac.  Every element has a diferent approach to these fuccboi shenanigans.

The actions of an unevolved fire sign would be an impulsive king of wands (Aries, Sagittarius, Leo). What about a water sign who is playing with your emotions? The Page of Cups or King of Cups in reverse next to The Fool? #HELYIN

What about that moon card in reverse?!  Do you have a distorted perception of reality due to being inexperienced and sheltered? Well it’s only a matter of time before an unevolved Earth sign feasts on your sweet innocence.  I’m lookin’ at YOU Hermit & Hierophant in reverse & The Devil! Hmmph! Have you ever been mind-f*cked by an air sign? They’re masterful at auto suggestion and persuasive techniques, and THAT’s why the seven of swords is able to get away with stealing large items in plain sight.

LOL <— I DID laugh out loud.

  1. The King of Wands in reverse.
  2. Seven of Swords
  3. The Moon in reverse
  4. Page of Cups in reverse
  5. The Sun in reverse

Um, what? A Uranus retrograde in August 2018? | Um, OMG Tarot

Uranus Retrograde 2018

Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun goes retrograde on August 7, 2018 until January 7, 2019.

Oh.  My.  Gosh…

For those of you who are concerned, I’ll have you know,  Uranus does this EVERY year for six months!

Um, that’s a bit much now Uranus, don’t you think?

The Uranus retrograde takes place at 2 degrees in Taurus where Uranus had transited back on May 15,  2018.  Uranus, the “rebel planet” in earthy Taurus, the 2nd house ruler was about shifts in financial earnings such as creating a unique new way of earning, or gaining possession of items with both monetary and sentimental value.  Uranus is the planet of unexpected change, so expect the unexpected!

You’ll notice that people feel empowered in their “weirdness” as they communicate.  People will feel sudden inspiration and intuitive action–especially when the Mars retrograde enters Capricorn during the last week of the Mercury retrograde!  People are tired of the same ol’ same ol’.  In the next six months, those of you who have gone inward about your position in this world will feel inspired to change their thoughts.  Due to this, people will be different, change their ways abruptly, creating a domino effect of change.  That means there are probably going to be miscommunication and relationship status changes!

With Uranus planetary energy the process will be unique and rooted in taking a risk or a leap of faith along the journey.–a desire to be free.  Because of the need for this sort of conscious shift, there’s a level of anxiety moving out of comfort zones.  Uranus is meant to be disruptive, and sometimes it’s the necessary push forward for continuous growth.

Uranus retrograde causes us to come to terms with our inner demons and the things that are hindering our personal freedom (ie. addictions, bad habits, procrastination of responsibilities).  Being a planet of change, you can expect a strong desire to move, change jobs or completely uproot your lifestyle.

Other retrograde activity during the Uranus Retrograde August 2018 – January 2019

  • Mercury Retrograde – July 26, 2018 – Aug 19, 2018
  • Uranus Retrograde – Aug 7, 2018 – Jan 7, 2019
  • Mar Retrograde enters Capricorn – Aug 12, 2018
  • Chiron Retrograde enters Pisces  –  Sept 25, 2018 – Dec 8, 2018
  • Venus Retrograde  – Oct 5, 2018 – Nov 15, 2018
  • Uranus Retrograde enters Aries Nov 6, 2018
  • Mercury Retrograde  Nov 16, 2018 – Dec 5, 2018

“I remember the last Uranus retrograde began in August 2017.   In the six months that followed, this was a particularly tumultuous time.  There was a lot of luck, and a lot of loss.  There was reconnections and reconciliation and surprising disconnections. There was a seamless wave of circumstances both good and bad during the entire duration of the six months.  It was up and down exactly like a rollercoaster.”

During a Uranus retrograde, consider that your inner world will shift, and for that to happen, one must learn lessons that change their core beliefs.  My advice for this Uranus retrograde would be, regardless of one’s sun sign is go with the flow and stay optimistic for what’s next!

I didn’t like Tarot cards… At all | Um, OMG Tarot

The first time I saw a deck of Tarot cards was at an occult bookshop over ten years ago. I wasn’t impressed. What’s the point of shuffling cards at random and picking a couple? How does that translate into ANYTHING relevant to my life? I was a huge hater. Whenever I purchased a reading, it always psychic or astrological. I never wanted a tarot card reading.

Five years ago, I helped write an athletic recipient’s achievement award speech. Half of his story was about his original distaste for the sport. He declined invites for years before he actually played. And now he’s a prominent figure in that community. He’s an accomplished athlete… in a sport he originally hated? That’s crazy to me.

With that, I realized that sometimes the things we push strongly against, are the things we need to explore. This theme has echoed throughout my life.

I dusted the cobwebs off of my Fairy Tarot deck. I purchased these cards because the box cover art has a tuxedo cat on the front. The moon card is illustrated on the back of the box as well. I had no idea at the time, but the moon card in tarot is associated with Pisces. Pisces? I AM A PISCES!  I regularly purchased gemstones, sage, Abraham-hicks books and all of that Law of Attraction/good juju stuff but I was done browsing the tarot card decks.  I only need one… Right?

lol

After reading through the Fairy Tarot instruction book, I realized how passionate I was NOT about this deck.  I put the deck down for five years and didn’t look at it once!

It wasn’t until I was inspired by a reader who told me I should pull cards daily, that I downloaded the Galaxy Tarot app (no sponsor) to learn the cards.  From then I watched videos about the Fool’s Journey on YouTube.  I also checked out the holy grail of all Tarot Card teaching videos, Ben Lucas’ “Learn the Tarot in 2 hrs!” Then I joined social media groups and even meet ups and yes–I bought new decks!

I started local readings in person.  I loved it.  I loved that all I had to do was read the story that was laid out in front of me.  I can do that.  I can explain what the cards mean in a descriptive and constructive way.  The positive feedback gave me confidence.  Helping people gain clarity gave me joy.

Having an intense familiarity with astrology made the readings feel natural, like I knew what type of person I was dealing with, and was speaking to a friend.  This became my style of reading.  Some call it “loud” but I call it “freedom to be myself.”

During my Tarot card learning hiatus, I studied astrology, numerology, dream interpretation and metaphysics-all of that spiritual, new age stuff.  Had I learned the cards back when I originally bought my first deck, I wouldn’t have understood their meanings. I wouldn’t have “got it.”

At first, I didn’t like the Tarot cards but now I honestly love ’em!
